Looking for a new manga series? This month, Brittany from Youth Services is recommending Witch Hat Atelier, an immersive fantasy manga series.
Brittany explains for us the premise of the series: “Witch Hat Atelier is about a young witch named Coco who aspires to be a witch, but everyone in her world knows that you must be born a witch in order to practice magic. However, one day, Coco discovers the secret behind magic in an unfortunate accident which claims her mother. Suddenly, Coco is thrust into an apprenticeship, and she moves in to the atelier, where she is introduced to the inner workings of magic! But it is bittersweet, for as her dreams come true, she vows to discover a way to bring back her mother.”
What’s to love about Witch Hat Atelier? “I love this series for its in-depth world-building and intricate illustrations,” Brittany describes. “Truly, the illustrations are incredible, and the magic system is dependent on the witches’ drawing abilities, so the story completely appeals to artistry. Moreover, Coco is a lovable and energetic protagonist with strong moral values, so as she meets darker forces, she is a valiant champion to root for.”
This series will appeal to fans of magic and wizardry, Studio Ghibli movies, and Little Witch Academia. Currently, Witch Hat Atelier is still being published, with up through the tenth volume available in English; the eleventh volume releases in English this September.
Additionally, Brittany adds, “We have it shelved under Adult Graphic Novel, but Coco and her peers are young teenagers, so I think it can be an appropriate series for teens to read as well. Of course, that’s up to the individual to determine.”
Thanks for the recommendation, Brittany!
