The God of Endings by Jacqueline Holland

Where to find this book at Reed Memorial Library:

Vampires, heartache, and suspense abound in this month’s book recommendation The God of Endings by Jacqueline Holland, which comes from Katie in Adult Services. Read all about it in today’s blog.

The God of Endings is a newly released science fiction novel. This is Jacqueline Holland’s debut novel, and it packs quite the literary power. Summarizing the plot in her own words, Katie explains, “This book tells the story of Anna, a child turned into a vampire hundreds of years ago. As a child, newly transformed and immortal, Anna encountered much loss, and she attributes the loss to Czernobog, the God of Endings. She moves from place to place, again and again, sensing a presence that is following her.”

“In present day, Anna goes by ‘Collette’ and runs a French preschool to gifted and wealthy children out of her beautiful old family home in Millstream Hollow, New York,” Katie continues. “Collette hesitantly forms a friendship with one of her students, Leo, who comes from a troubled home but shows so much potential as a budding and enthusiastic artist, like herself. She struggles with the idea of getting attached to anyone given her immortality, her past, and the thought of losing anyone else that she cares about.”

The nuanced and relatable themes interwoven into this story are what stuck out to Katie. She says, “The story alternates between child Anna and adult Collette, and is a beautiful tale of love and loss, perseverance, and of learning to find strength and beauty in the most terrible of circumstances.”

Holland’s writing in this atmospheric and complex book has been liked to Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Carmen Maria Machado by Gabino Iglesias of NPR.

I didn’t find this to be a typical vampire book. The story revolves around our narrator who is a vampire, but it was about so much more than that. I found myself caring for all of the characters and their individual stories. It is a fairly hefty book but I found myself drawn to it–it didn’t drag at any point during the story.
