Sankofa by Chibundu Onuzo

Where to find this book at Reed Memorial Library:

This month’s book recommendation is courtesy of Angela from Adult Services, who is suggesting the adult fiction novel Sankofa by Chibundu Onuzo. Keep reading to hear Angela’s thoughts and insights on this book.

Angela pitches Sankofa to us as “A woman’s search for her biological father takes her into a journey of self-discovery across the globe. She has to reckon with the past before she can move forward.”

One of the questions at the heart of the novel is “What does it mean for a woman to reclaim herself, to become herself?”

Angela, describing Sankofa

“It’s easy to read and engages you, wanting to know what Anna, the key character, will discover next,” Angela lauds. “Many unexpected twists and turns throughout, and a big surprise at the end.” She says Sankofa will appeal to fans of An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.

Angela leads the World Literature Book Club here at Reed, and Sankofa was their September pick. She says, “My World Literature Book Club totally loved it!” Sankofa was also the October 2021 pick for Reese’s Book Club and has attracted a lot of attention since its publication.

The next World Literature Book Club meeting Angela is hosting will be Tuesday, October 3 from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, and they will be discussing Zorba the Greek by Nikos Kazantzakis. View the details on our website. You won’t want to miss it!

Thanks for the recommendation, Angela!
