Annie from Youth Services is recommending the thoughtful and inspirational picture book Something, Someday by Amanda Gorman. Keep reading to hear more about this wonderful children’s book perfect for summer!

Written by Amanda Gorman, the National Youth Poet Laureate, Something, Someday begins:
You are told
That this is not a problem.
But you’re sure
There’s something wrong.
The book continues, addressing the reader as “you,” providing gentle encouragement to try to fix the issues we see around us. As Annie summarizes, the story is about “our power to make a difference.”
Accompanying Gorman’s words is Christian Robinson’s illustrations, which visually portray a child who notices the trash around their neighborhood and decides to organize a community cleanup and garden plot. Christian Robinson has also illustrated children’s books such as You Matter, Just in Case You Want to Fly, and more.
Annie comments, “I love this book because it reminds me that even small gestures can change our world.” She says a book similar in theme is the juvenile fiction book Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman.

As Something, Someday approaches its end, the narrative comes full circle:
Suddenly, there’s something
You’re sure is right.
Something you know
You helped fix.
Something small that changed–
Something big.
Annie also tends to the library plants found around our children’s area, and she runs our Library Garden Club for children. This summer, Library Garden Club meets Tuesday, June 18 from 2:00-3:00 PM; Tuesday, July 23 from 2:00-3:00 PM; and Thursday, August 22 from 6:00-7:00 PM.
Thanks for the recommendation, Annie!
