Katie from Adult Services recommends A Sorceress Comes to Call to readers who enjoy a good fairytalesque novel. This book is standalone, but it is similar to other works by T. Kingfisher in that it blends magic, fantasy, and horror.
A Sorceress Comes to Call is about a young girl named Cordelia and her mother, Evangeline. Evangeline is a wicked sorceress who has kept her daughter sheltered and under her thumb from birth. Cordelia knows her mother can be viciously cruel to get what she wants. Cordelia also knows that something is not normal about her mother.
Evangeline takes Cordelia away to live with a squire she has set her sights on. In her new home, Cordelia is surprised to meet people who are kind and understanding, especially the squire’s sister, Hester. Befriending each other, Cordelia and Hester realize they must find a way to stop whatever terrible plan Evangeline has in mind.
“I enjoyed the magical elements and the friendship between Cordelia and Hester,” Katie says. “I do tend to gravitate towards magic and fantasy when looking for new books to try.
Katie also recommends Nettle & Bone by the same author. Many of Kingfisher’s works are available in our digital catalog as well. See all the works by T. Kingfisher that you can borrow in our catalog.
Thanks for the recommendation, Katie!
