Movin’ on Up: A book family reunion

Things are moving and shaking at the library. This week, it’s mostly adult-level fiction books. Yesterday, staff finished moving the new fiction books to the second floor, reuniting them with their older siblings. Finally, the fiction family is together!  Very soon, the non-fiction family will be in one home, too. We’re not really moving materials around to reunite book families; we have a plan. Want to hear know what’s happening?

Why are we moving materials upstairs?

We’re not moving books and shelves around to please ourselves or to frustrate you. These moves give our children’s area some much-needed space to expand. The children’s area currently has half of the first floor and the teen room, roughly 30% of the space. The rest of the library is adult-level books and materials. In contrast, our kids’ programs and materials are a much bigger part of everyday activity and library use. We need to allocate appropriate space to keep up.

Right now, the children’s materials are all on the Main Street side of the building, and frankly, they’re kind of crammed together. Soon, we’ll be moving children’s materials into the space on the first-floor vacated by the adult-level books. We’ll air out the children’s materials, making them easier for both kids and parents to find.

Ultimately, this change is better for adult readers, too, because it unites nearly all the adult-level books together in one place. With the exception of large print, which remains on the first floor, you can search through and browse to find the right book in one place. When we’re all done, whether you’re looking for the newest Jack Reacher novel or researching your home improvement project, you will find what you want on the second floor.

All of this moving and rearranging won’t happen at once, but our goal is to be finished by summer’s end. Few of us acclimate to change easily, so these changes will take some adjustment. We’ll put up signs in the familiar places to redirect you while we’re moving materials around. And once we’re done, we’ll give you a final update and even a tour if you like! During and after the changes; any time you feel lost or can’t find what you need, just ask. Our staff are happy to help.
