Does your family have an Uncle Buck? He’s that adventurous, standout relative from way, way back that everyone tells stories about at family reunions. But how would you discover his story beyond the family tales? Reed Memorial Library has free access to a host of genealogy and history research tools. More important, if Uncle Buck lived in our area, we have a local history collection that you can search. Where do you find it? Keep reading for details.
Our extensive collection of genealogy and local history materials focus on Ravenna and the Portage County area. You’ll find the collection in our Local History Room on the second floor. It’s open to the public during our regular hours. Set some time aside when you visit: local history materials need to be used inside the library; you cannot check them out. From family and company histories to old newspapers to school yearbooks and historical maps, we have a treasure trove to explore.
If you share what or who you are researching, our staff can help you by showing some likely sources to investigate. If you want to work one-on-one with a staff member, make sure we’re available by scheduling some time in advance. If you don’t live locally but have a historical or genealogical question related to our area, you can send questions and inquiries to genealogy@reedlibrary.org. Please make requests as specific as possible.
Even if you aren’t doing research, if you have any interest in local history, stop in and browse through the collection. The historical maps alone can be fascinating to look through and the high school yearbooks hold plenty of nostalgia. Definitely make plans to visit if you’re trying to get a comprehensive portrait of your relative. Uncle Buck left a trail of information beyond just the family stories. When you’re searching for those details, our library’s local history collection might provide the final puzzle pieces.
