It’s the season for gifting, and we know that books are the best gift of all. But how to choose the right one? Do you pick the latest bestseller or new release? Maybe gift one of the classics? Our staff came through with some recommendations to help; some new, some old, some timeless titles.
Books for little listeners and readers
For early readers, it’s pretty easy to find a book with engaging illustrations and imaginative stories to capture their attention. Any of these three would make a great gift and be enjoyable to read aloud with a little one.

- If You Go Down to the Woods Today by Rachel Piercey and Freya Hartas
This book follows Bear as he guides readers through a magical woodland across the seasons. Each page shows animals enjoying playful activities, with rhyming poems and detailed illustrations that invite children to spot hidden surprises and explore the wonders of nature. - Where the Deer Slip Through by Katey Howes & Beth Krommes
Sweet, soothing text and beautifully executed illustrations! - The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywelt
Poor Duncan just wants to color. But when he opens his box of crayons, he finds only written letters, all saying the same thing: His crayons have had enough! They quit! Blue Crayon needs a break from coloring all those bodies of water. Black Crayon wants to be used for more than just outlining. And Orange and Yellow are no longer speaking—each believes he is the true color of the sun. What can Duncan possibly do to appease all the crayons and get them back to doing what they do best?
For early readers and middle grades
These books are ideal for children already reading on their own. Summer of the Monkeys and The Sign of the Beaver are also perfect for reading aloud together, one of the most enjoyable things to do with an emerging reader.

You can purchase many of these books just down the street from the library, at Ravenna’s new bookstore, Books A Go Go. We’d encourage you to stop in and talk to the owner, Cathy. She can help you find a title and if she doesn’t have it in stock, she can order it in for you.

If nothing on our list sounds right for the person on your gift list, ask one of our staff on your next library trip what they might recommend.
The only question remaining is what book is on YOUR gift list?
