Fantasy fans, take note! Dan, our Youth Outreach Associate, is recommending The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. Keep reading to learn more about this adventurous story inspired by Norse mythology.
The Sword of Summer is the first book in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard trilogy by Rick Riordan, who is the author of the immensely popular Percy Jackson series. Dan succinctly summarizes the plot of The Sword of Summer for us as: “Homeless teen finds a cool sword, then dies, but goes on an apocalypse-preventing quest in the afterlife.”
Fantastic adventures abound in this fast-paced novel. “The main character, Magnus Chase, is woefully unprepared for his adventure and has a very catty attitude about the greatness thrust upon him,” Dan explains. “He goes from surviving on the streets looking for his next meal and a safe place to sleep to bartering with Norse gods and fighting giants.”
Dan adds, “The series is in the same universe as the Percy Jackson series and has the same basic concept; however Magnus is much sassier and sarcastic than Percy.” Even though The Sword of Summer is related to the Percy Jackson books, Dan tells us that you don’t need to have read any other books before going into the Magnus Chase trilogy. Although the trilogy does contain references to the Percy Jackson series, Magnus Chase can be read completely on its own.
For further reading, the books in the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard trilogy are:
- #1 The Sword of Summer
- #2 The Hammer of Thor
- #3 The Ship of the Dead
Thanks for the recommendation, Dan!
