We invite you to explore two exciting events that celebrate community, literature, and the spirit of autumn. “Read the Rustbelt” with Bonnie Jo Campbell’s book, “American Salvage” and participate in our short ‘n sweet RML Fall Challenge. Keep reading to learn more.
First, Reading the Rustbelt – A Community Reading Event
We’re excited to be part of this year’s Community Reading Event organized by Hiram College. The center of this literary journey is Bonnie Jo Campbell’s book, “American Salvage.” In this collection of short stories, we meet rural, working-class characters who are down on their luck but definitely not ready to give up. “These short stories approach their subjects from an array of perspectives, but what they share is freshness, surprise, and a compulsion to plumb some absolute extremes of American existence.”―National Book Award citation
Join us at RML for a thought-provoking book discussion of “American Salvage” and a craft using salvaged materials to get a deeper understanding of the place we call home. The Community Read starts today, September 20th and is packed with nearly 20 events running through October 30th. Attend one of our events and see all of the lectures, activities, and discussions taking place county-wide at the Community Reading Program page.
Second, The RML Fall Challenge – A Month Full of Fun
Can you feel October arriving around the corner? It’s bringing crisp air, colorful leaves, and the promise of cozy moments. October also brings our short ‘n sweet Fall Challenge. From October 1 to October 31, you’re invited to participate in a delightful combination of fall-themed activities and the joy of reading.
The concept is simple and uses a BINGO board in Beanstack. Complete some or all of nine fall-themed activities, like reading a book set in autumn, attending our Family Halloween Party, or visiting the Dix Story Trail. You win by completing three in a row on the virtual bingo card or you may complete all the activities.

No need for logging minutes read – we’ve simplified this challenge for you. Plus, every badge you earn means you earn stickers for our special poster. As you collect stickers and place them on the poster, you reveal a mystery image that’s waiting to be unveiled! We’ll share the image reveal as it happens, so follow us on social media. Can you guess what it is? This challenge is for all ages, so gather your family and friends for a month of fall festivities and fun. Sign up now on Beanstack to be ready October 1.

As the leaves change colors and the air turns brisk, we hope you will join us on these literary and community adventures. Whether you’re diving into the pages of “American Salvage” or taking on our Fall Challenge, you’ll be part of something special.
