Before Morning by Joyce Sidman: A Reed Reads! Book Rec

Before Morning by Joyce Sidman, illustrated by Beth Krommes

Where to find this book at Reed Memorial Library:

Picture books are a pleasure to read for all ages, and this month we are spotlighting a delightfully seasonal little tale. Youth Services Supervisor Alison recommends the wintry classic picture book, Before Morning by Joyce Sidman. Continue reading to learn more about what makes this such a lovely piece.

Before Morning has a simple, heartfelt plot and intricate illustrations with detailed linework. As Alison describes, “The story is of a child who wishes for snow to fall over night; the child wishes for a slow, quiet day at home with her busy family.” The book is the product of Newbery Honor winner, author Joyce Sidman and Caldecott medalist, illustrator Beth Krommes.

When asked why this book resonates with her, Alison explained, “The book invokes the spirit of the warmth and coziness of a snow day. I love that the cozy spirit of the words is so well-supported by Krommes’ scratchboard illustrations. There is an old-fashioned quality to them that works so well with the text.” The images truly add depth to the thoughtfully sparse and lovely text.

Thanks for the recommendation, Alison!
