An afternoon to remember, together

Have you made a plan to watch the total solar eclipse on April 8th? We’ve planned a watch party from 2pm to 4pm and we hope you’ll be there!

On April 8th, join us on a big grassy lawn for our Eclipse Watch Party. We’ll have music, free eclipse glasses, and for when it gets really dark – glow sticks. It’s all happening at the site of the former RHS building, at the corner of Clinton and East Main Streets (for all you ice cream lovers, that’s right next to Dairy Queen). The city has graciously let us use the lot for the afternoon. They will be shutting down motor access to Clinton Street, which helps greatly with safety at the watch party.

Bending and Stretching With Us

Work has started in earnest and as of late today, our back entrance is closed. Tomorrow, the construction crew will put up some safety fence, designed to keep the work inside and to keep you safely outside the work zone.

Safety First

The library will stay open during this construction project but we all need to pay extra attention to construction signs, cones, and boundaries. The signs and boundaries are there to keep you safe but still give you access to the library. It’s a juggling act to keep the library open while it’s also an active construction zone.

It All Starts With a Seed

We have lots of unusual things (that aren’t books) that you can borrow at our library: cake pans, traffic cone kits, museum passes, board games and more. But something new and a little different is coming to the library this Spring – seeds! We’ve planned and prepared throughout the winter and soon we will launch the seed library at RML.

Great News! (But where can I park?)

The mild weather prediction for winter held true and this means that soon you’ll see work begin on our landscape renovation. Enviroscapes, a company in Louisville, is the contractor performing the work. They’re ready to go and have set mid-February as a starting date, June for completion.

Holiday Freebies

Earlier this month, Cornelius checked out a book, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, and a movie, Miracle on 34th Street (he’s very sentimental).  He is very busy, getting cookies baked and the house decorated before Cora visits on Christmas Day. Cornelius is so busy that he hasn’t had time to read his book or watch his movie. He checks the due date on his library receipt: December 24th!! Now he’s really stressed that his book and movie are due on Christmas Eve. He’s not sure he has time to return them but he really, really doesn’t want them to be late. What should he do?

What Will You (3D) Print First?

You’re just a few steps away from your first 3D print!

OK, maybe it is and maybe it’s not your first 3D print. But it will be your first print from the library!

Let’s face it, most of us don’t own a 3D printer. Some of us have used one, most of us have seen one or at least seen something made with a 3D printer. And most of us have wished we had access to one.

Well, now you do! We’ve opened up the library’s 3D printer to print your files into reality. The only cost is for the filament you use (pretty minimal). It’s a simple, 3-step process:

Warm Gifts From the Giving Tree

Are you feeling a little cold today? Need to buy a new pair of gloves? Consider getting an extra pair and donating them to someone in need. We’ll give you details on how and where to give.

Once again, we’ve put up our Giving Tree and are accepting donations at the library to keep our community warm this winter. As it gets colder outside, let’s come together and ensure that everyone can keep their fingers, toes, heads and noses warm.

Bring in your donations any time the library is open. New gloves, mittens, hats and scarves in any and every size are needed.  Last year, we accepted your donations through the end of February. Since cold weather lasts well past the holidays, we will do the same this year. All your donations will be given to individuals through Ravenna’s Center of Hope and The Haven of Portage County.

When you donate, bring your items to the Public Services desk. Our staff will take your donation and give you a mitten cutout. Write your name on the mitten and hang it on the Giving Tree. We hope to cover the tree with decorated mittens and fill the donation boxes with warm gifts.

‘Tis the Season for Madness

Here at Reed Memorial Library, it’s time again to go crazy with #GingerbreadMadness and Midnight Madness. Gingerbread Madness is already in full swing and we’re deep in planning for our part in Ravenna’s Midnight Madness celebration.

Our free Gingerbread Madness house kits were gone super quickly again this year. We assembled over 100 kits and limited them to one per family to make sure more of you could participate. Although the kits are gone, you can make or bake your own creation to join in the madness; we’d love to have you participate! You choose: go all out and bake a masterpiece or pick up a ready-made kit at the store and customize it. Then bring it to the library so we can put it on display. Download some helpful tips and an icing recipe if you need it and don’t forget to check out our #gingerbreadmadness board on Pinterest for inspiration.
